Desert Ironwood (desert ironwood) grows in the southern U.S. and northern Mexico in desert landscapes. It is very hard, has a high density and therefore does not absorb water very well. It is used for knife blades and is also popular on short-barreled firearms. Its machinability is more complicated than other woods because of its high hardness. It is one of the exclusive woods. Knives that have blades made of this wood sell for higher amounts. Because it is a protected species, only licensed persons are allowed to harvest and trade this wood. Only dead trees may be harvested.

Something about Olneya tesota

One of the most important and oldest plants of the Sonoran Desert. Although the extremely dense wood makes standard dating of tree rings difficult, it is estimated that the tree is capable of living almost 800 years! The tree acts as a nurse plant, its canopy providing ideal shelter and nutrients for many other plants, including the Saguaro cactus. Its role in the desert is considered so important that the Ironwood tree has been a protected species in Arizona since the 1970s. Desert ironwoods are very thorny. In late spring, they have beautiful light pink, pea-like flowers and provide excellent habitat for wildlife.
